Fat & Weight Loss

Many of us are always trying new things that will help us to lose weight and stay healthy. There are hundreds of diets that claim to ‘sculpt’ your body and help you to shed those unwanted pounds quickly and easily – but how do we know they really work without having to waste our time, energy, and money on it? Choose a diet that has been researched thoroughly and accurately by professionals who know what to look for in a healthy diet.

Researchers at the University of Illinois are performing studies of the effect that soy has on people and how it could help to affectively lose weight. Elvira de Mejia – the U of I assistant professor of food science and human nutrition said, “We wanted to compare the effects of soy protein hydrolysates and soy peptides with those of leptin because we hypothesized that soy might behave in the body in a similar way. Leptin is a hormone produced in our adipose tissue that interacts with receptors in the brain and signals us that we’re full so we stop eating.”

In this study they were hoping to find some answers to see if the soy protein hydrolysates would have any effect on regulatory hormones and their receptors. “And we found that soy did have an effect on these mechanisms and hormones that are induced in the body to help us degrade lipids and reduce body weight, but it did so by boosting metabolism and not by reducing food intake,” Mejia said. Everywhere we go and every time we turn around it seems that there is a new book or program that claims to be the one that will shed off all the weight with no problems. Many of us have tried the drinks, the bars, and even the pills in hopes that we can lose the weight in time for our high school reunion or for that vacation in the Caribbean. Most of these diets have failed us and left us with disappointment. According to the Aberdeen Rowett Research Institute all of that is about to change.

The scientists at the Rowett Institute have proven that having a low carbohydrate, high protein diet will help to curb the hunger and give you the best weight loss results in a short amount of time. This study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Scientists volunteered healthy, obese men and put them on two different diets. Both of the diets contained high protein content. However, the carbohydrates that they consumed were different amounts. One diet has a moderate amount of carbohydrates, while the other diet had a low amount. Read the rest of this entry »

There are many teenagers who have found themselves overweight and out of shape. This is because society encourages them to eat junk food and to play video games all day. Instead we should be encouraging our children to choose the healthy foods over the greasy ones and to go outside and walk, run, or play a sport that they love.

There are many steps that a teenager can take to lose the weight:

  •  Before they can lose anything they must have the desire to do it. Without this desire there is no drive or goal for them to reach. Try to sit down with your teenager and explain to them the health problems that they could face in the future if they do not lose it. Explain to them that greasy foods can damage the heart and other areas of the body. Not to mention the weight can keep them from doing some of the things they love.
